This medication is prescribed to help with the relief of mild to moderate pain. Codeine is an opioid analgesic, which is a type of pain reliever. It changes how your body feels and responds to pain by acting on the brain.
How Should Codeine Sulfate Be Used?
Before you begin taking codeine, and each time you get a refill, read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist. If you have any concerns, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Take this medication by mouth, exactly as prescribed by your doctor. You can take this medication with or without food. If you have nausea, taking this medication with food may help. Inquire with your doctor or pharmacist about other ways to reduce nausea (such as lying down for 1 to 2 hours with as little head movement as possible).
If you are taking this medication in liquid form, carefully measure the dose with a special measuring device/spoon. You should not use a regular spoon because you may not get the correct dose.
The dosage is determined by your medical condition as well as your response to treatment. Do not increase your dose or use this medication more frequently or for a longer period of time than prescribed, as this may increase your risk of side effects. When instructed, discontinue the medication.
Pain relievers work best when taken as soon as the first signs of pain appear. If you wait until the pain has become unbearable, the medication may not be as effective.
If you have chronic pain (for example, from cancer), your doctor may advise you to take long-acting opioid medications as well. In that case, this medication could be used only for acute (breakthrough) pain. Other pain relievers (such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen) may be prescribed as well. Inquire with your doctor or pharmacist about the safe use of codeine in conjunction with other medications.
Stopping this medication abruptly may cause withdrawal symptoms, especially if you have been taking it for a long time or in high doses. To avoid withdrawal, your doctor may gradually reduce your dose. Notify your doctor or pharmacist right away if you experience any withdrawal symptoms such as restlessness, mental/mood changes (including anxiety, difficulty sleeping, or suicidal thoughts), watering eyes, runny nose, nausea, diarrhea, sweating, muscle aches, or sudden behavioral changes.
When this medication is used for an extended period of time, it may lose its effectiveness. Consult your doctor if this medication is no longer working properly.
Despite the fact that it benefits many people, this medication can sometimes lead to addiction. If you have a substance use disorder (such as overuse or addiction to drugs/alcohol), your risk may be increased. To reduce the risk of addiction, take this medication exactly as directed. For more information, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Inform your doctor if your pain does not improve or worsens.
If you are taking codeine to treat a cough, notify your doctor if your cough does not improve within 5 days or if your condition worsens.
